This Spiced Plum Jam is the first time I have tried this recipe. I try every year to find a new recipe to can. This one is so good I think it is going to stay a regular. I just love it on a toasted bagel with cream cheese.

Ingredients for the Spiced Plum Jam:
This recipe was inspired by familyfoodgarden.com.
- 8 cups of pitted and chopped purple plums (I used golden plums. They tasted better at the fruit stand.)
- 3 1/2 cups of sugar
- 3 tablespoons of lemon juice
- 2 teaspoons of cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon of ground cloves
- 2 packet of liquid pectin
Remember to have the lids and rings in hot water, and the water bath pot boiling.
First, you want to put the plums and sugar and lemon juice over medium high heat. When the sugar has dissolved and the plums have released some of their juices, I take a potato masher to the mixture just to break it up a bit more. Then, I add in the spices. Once it is at a good boil add in the pectin. Keep stirring. When I think it is thick enough I do the plate test. (see here to read about the plate test). Once it is thick and passes the plate test, remove it from the heat. Then ladle into your sterilized jars. Don’t forget to wipe the rims before you put on the lids and rings. Last, process in the water bath for 10 minutes(adjust for the altitude). If the is the first time you are canning here is a good place to start.
There you have it, spice plum jam, a perfect homemade gift. Making something from nothing.
